Is Thanksgiving celebrated in other countries?

Many people assume that Thanksgiving is a holiday unique to the United States. In fact, cultures around the world celebrate in a similar way.

While the names and dates vary, many countries celebrate “Thanksgiving-type” holidays or festivals:

    • Chu Suk during the harvest season in Korea
    • The Kadazan harvest festival in Malaysia during the month of May
    • Thanksgiving Day in Canada the second Monday of October
    • Ladin and Pongal in India

The traditions may be different, but the underlying meaning is similar: a time to express gratitude, give thanks and celebrate good fortune and a bountiful harvest.
