Many people assume that Thanksgiving is a holiday unique to the United States. In fact, cultures around the world celebrate in a similar way.
While the names and dates vary, many countries celebrate “Thanksgiving-type” holidays or festivals:
- Chu Suk during the harvest season in Korea
- The Kadazan harvest festival in Malaysia during the month of May
- Thanksgiving Day in Canada the second Monday of October
- Ladin and Pongal in India
The traditions may be different, but the underlying meaning is similar: a time to express gratitude, give thanks and celebrate good fortune and a bountiful harvest.
