Client review can be an important step in a successful translation workflow.

A proper client review can lead to increased quality, especially relative to specific terminology for your industry or your company. We agree with the use of client review, in fact we provide an easy way to facilitate the process of client review.

However, most clients don’t properly qualify their reviewers. A good reviewer should posses the following qualities:

– the ability to set vocabulary preferences
The reviewer should have a position that allows them to steer the terminology of the firm in the given language pair. For example in marketing projects a product manager in the target country might review all marketing materials.

– a deep knowledge of industry terminology and company terminology in both the source and target languages
The reviewer should understand the important terms used in the content being reviewed. Using a reviewer that can only read the target language doesn’t work. The reviewer has to properly understand the source language to properly evaluate the original message of the content.

-a neutral but vested interest in the process

The reviewer should not have an interest in seeing the translation team fail. Using a competing translation provider produces a conflict of interest that reduces the objectivity of the review. Using someone that is completely disconnected from your organization is also not a good idea as the reviewer doesn’t have a vested interest in the content.

Good candidates include: product managers, marketing managers and technical writers.

Poor candidates would include: your gardener, your colleague’s son studying Spanish in college and the waiter at your favorite {insert ethnic Cuisine here} restaurant.
